German listening practice
Reading a word and recognising it when someone says it are two different skills, and the second one is what fails first in a real conversation. This mode plays a word and asks you to pick the meaning — no text until after you have answered.
Why listening is the skill that lags
Written German gives you word boundaries, capital letters on nouns and as much time as you want. Speech gives you none of those. The gap between reading a word comfortably and catching it at conversational speed is wide, and the only thing that closes it is hearing the word repeatedly without the spelling in front of you.
An honest limitation
The audio uses your device's built-in speech synthesis rather than recorded human audio. On most machines that gives a clear, if slightly flat, German voice. On some Android and Linux setups no German voice is installed at all, and the button will do nothing — that is a limitation of this site, not a fault of your browser. Pre-recorded audio is the fix, and it is on the list.
How to use it
Play the word before looking at the options. If you need it twice, play it twice — that is the practice, not a failure. Answer, then read the example sentence to anchor the sound to a context.
